Well it was challenging, but so many students mastered the Challenge. Enjoy watching them in the slideshow below. (They ate lunch in class with me and Mrs. Pitts today.)

Last day of Kindergarten~ We have an early dismissal schedule and Extended Day is closed.
The students were too cute with their hats on... but many had them off because they wanted to show their friends their "Super Cool Hats!" haha So they didn't wear them as much in the classroom, as they did outside at recess. (I'm sorry if your child is missing from the pictures, they wanted to play and didn't want to be photographed. haha)
Our Resources for the week are: Monday- #1-18 ART and #19-37 MUSIC and Friday- MUSIC. Friday

MATH
We are busy decomposing and
composing teen numbers. Students are learning that the teen numbers can
be broken into one ten and single ones. This is the foundation for place
value which is a very important building block for the upcoming year in
first grade. The students will learn that they can create addition and
subtraction equations based on breaking apart these numbers. Continue
working on Subtraction fluency cards. Fluency is addition and
subtraction is so important.
ELA
The sight words we are focusing on are any, too, want and also. Make sure to
practice letter sounds daily with your child- use lowercase letter cards. The word family for this week is -ack. (Only make real words... not pretend words.) Our blend for the week is ch-. We will continue practicing segmenting words, producing medial sounds for words and substituting sounds for words at the end.
Our
Reading lessons will be about figuring out unknown words in books. We will be discussing
the words from the following books: EEK! There's a Mouse in the House and The Sleeping Pig. Here are the youtube video's for both books, check them out and discuss possible unknown words with your child. :)
We are still working on our Kindergarten Memory Books. They are too cute!! The students have been working hard at using their sounds and the Word Wall to find all their sight words.
SCIENCE
This week we are exploring
seeds and plants. We will observe various seeds and learn how they are
how a plant begins. Our class will take a nature walk this week too! I
know the students will enjoy comparing different types of trees and
plants we have on our school campus!
(Here is a picture of how our Class Tree looked back in January. :) Be on the lookout for a new picture and see how our Class Tree looks now! )
We began the day with a Parade. Lots of students dressed up in costumes to represent countries around the world. :) Namiah and Abigail were in the Parade and we cheered them on. Namiah represented Jamaica and Abigail represented the Phillipines.
As soon as the Parade ended we were on our way to our first presentation with Mr. D. He drew Caricatures of a few students and one of me and Mrs. Pitts. We were drinking DD coffee. (haha The kids told him we drink iced coffee every day! haha)
After that we walked around the "World" and traveled to all the different Continents~ Asia, North America, South America, Europe, Antarctica, Australia and ended with Africa (our Continent of Study). In each area we had our passports stamped by a Customs Agent and sampled a food. The foods sampled were sticky rice, chocolate chip cookies, bananas, croissants, shaved ice, Lamington cake and fig newtons.
Then we had three more back to back presentations~ Interactive Story Telling Show. The class LOVED getting a chance to participate in the show and answer all her questions. Afterwards we went to the Multi- Purpose room and watched our very own Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Handres and a group of adults dance English Country Line Dancing. The class was so amazed to see Mrs. Handres and loved watching all the foot work. (There's a short video in the slideshow so you can experience a little of the dancing too.) Our last presentation was all about Morocco. We discussed the language, the traditions and the Dancing!! The class did a great job dancing to the beat of the music, but a few... their dance moves are way too fast for the syncronized moves. haha
Anyway, we hope everyone enjoyed International Day and look forward to the celebration again next school year!! ooh make sure to check out the International Shirts the students painted. Everyone worked really hard on them!
During the Week of Play Day, everyone decorated their front doors to show off their students superhero powers. Then Mrs. Gordon and the group of judges picked a winner for each grade level... well our class WON for Kindergarten!! :) Everyone will receive a bottle of superhero bubbles to bring home on Monday!
Here is a picture of our door titled~ Superhero School.
We decided to have the stuents decorate a superhero picture and then come up with their superhero name.
The pictures are cute, but the names are adorable!
Our Resources for the week are: Monday- #1-18 MUSIC and #19-37 P.E., Tuesday- #1-18 in the classroom and #19-37 P.E., Wednesday- #1-18 P.E. and #19-37 MEDIA and Thursday- ART.
Friday
is International Day!! Please remember that the students who painted an African Design shirt will change into them Friday morning. (The shirts were kept at school.)
Namiah is bringing in Fun Friday Snacks.
MATH
We are finishing up subtraction word problems within 10. Please make sure to review that in subtraction the amount of the whole group is written first and that we use a minus sign. (Your child may even say they need "Linus the Minus.")
READING SKILLS AND WRITING
The sight words we are focusing on are where, through, much and right. Make sure to
practice letter sounds daily with your child- use lowercase letter cards. The word family for this week is -ip. (Only make real words... not pretend words.) Our blend for the week is sh-. We will continue practicing segmenting words, producing medial sounds for words and substituting sounds for words at the end. Our Writing Lessons will consist on completing pages in our Kindergarten Memory Books. :) The class will brainstorm ideas for pages that should go into our books and then we will work on completing a few pages this week. While working we will stress the importance of spacing, sounds, sight words and punctuation.
DAILY AFRICAN LESSONS
We wanted to focus a little bit more on Africa before International Day arrives... and we have decided to incorporate fun, excitement and crafts! We will be learning about the pyramids in Egypt, discussing hieroglyphics, animals found in Africa and singing African songs!
JAMBO everyone, JAMBO!
Here is a short Youtube Video to get you all excited!
I hope every one went home and told their parents a ton about Play Day. :) It was great!! Our Play Day started a little late due to rain... but it didn't stop the kids from having any FUN when we finally got to go outside. :)
We wanted to give a special thanks to the parents that Volunteered their time and stopped by to cheer their children on: Mrs. Gray, Mr. Downer, Mrs. Barlow and Mrs. Orr. Your children LOVED having you there!!
We noticed there was a mistake with the Calendar... Today was the last Early Release Day for the School Year. :) Please cross out the other ERD written on the Calendar.
Then add our PARTY DAY on June 3. :) More information about the party will be sent home in your child's folder.
*These changes will be reflected on the Weekly Conduct Sheets. We will not be printing new calendars, but you should be able to print out a new one from the May Calendar Link.
Our May/June Calendar informed everyone we will be decorating solid colored t-shirts for International Cultural Day. :)
**This activity is not mandatory, but it is TONS OF FUN!**
We
went through all the possible symbols that we would be willing to draw
on a t-shirt. (I have pictured a few of the favorites here.) To see all the symbols, go
to this link.
When the students bring a shirt to school, they will be asked what
symbol they want and it will be drawn on their shirt. During Recess time
the students will have the opportunity to paint their shirts.
I emailed this out to our Kindergarten Distribution List... but just in case you aren't on it, I am posting it here too. :)
All of you should have received a note discussing the Community Service
Project our school is doing for National Police Week. (It is celebrated May 10-16) The
project is headed by Mrs. Tokarek, she is one of our 1st grade teachers. She is collecting different types of candy to fill up Police Survival Bags.
She has said, "Anyone who brings in a bag of candy gets something from
her Treasure Box." Her treasure box has LOTS of things in it. :) So if
you wish to participate~ please send in the candy by Wednesday May 6th.
If
you have any questions about the candy, please let us know and anything
we are unable to answer will be directed to Mrs. Tokarek.
Here is a picture of the different types of candy we purchased for the Police Survival Bags.
