Week of March 30

Image result for easter images
It is a short week. The students have off on Thursday and Friday. :) Enjoy the time off and we hope everyone has a great Easter!!

We have FSA Testing going on at school and we will not have Resources this week. However Mrs. Pitts Mom, Ms. Lori, will be stopping by to complete an Easter Craft with the class. :)

MATH
We are continuing to join to parts to make a whole. Practice doing this at home with your child~ tell them a number and then ask them to tell you two parts that make that number. An example would be 6. Your child may say 1 and 5, or 2 and 4, or 3 and3, or they may surprise you and say 6 and 0.
Try it out! We have practiced in class with number 3-9.

ELA
The sight words we are focusing on are over and new.  The rest of the year will consist of MORE SOUND WORK!! Make sure to practice letter sounds daily with your child. In class we will be practicing... Vowels, Blends, Digraphs, Medial Sounds and Word Families. :) The word family for this week is -et(Practice asking your child , "Who can we invite to the -et House Party?" Please make sure all their responses are real words.) Our blend for the week is bl-. (Be ready for your child to think of lots of words!! A few examples that are in the slideshow I made= black, blanket, blouse.) We will continue practicing segmenting words, producing medial sounds for words (we will focus this week and next week on the A sound= short A~cat and long A~wake), substituting sounds for words at the end (ex bag~ change the /g/ to a /t/ and the new word is bat.)

Our Reading lessons will be about comparing and contrasting two similar stories. The stories we are reading are The Grumpy Easter Bunny by Justine Korman and The Easter Egg by Jan Brett. Both stories have a bunny as a main character and there are a few similarities... but there are lots of differences! :) Be ready to hear all about them from your child.

Here is a catchy short A video we will be watching this week and a video of the book The Easter Egg.

SCIENCE
Be on the look out for the moon again this week. We will be discussing the different ways the moon looks and making an entry in our Science journal.

Library Visit!!

Thursday we had our Library Visit with Mrs. Noah Thomas. :)

We all LOVE her!!! Mrs. Thomas always teaches us something new and fun. Not to mention she brings presents and treats for everyone. haha The class is always very respectful and THANKS her a ton for everything.

Well today's lesson was all about Walt Disney: his life, his movies, his theme parks... and so much more. Not to mention a cute Mickey/ MInnie craft. :) She always thinks of a way to make something cute for the boys and something a little different for the girls. :)

Enjoy the slideshow and the mini video at the end of it!

The sight words we are focusing on are out, would, him and did.  During skills we are continuing sound work!! We will practice rhyming through word families. The word family for this week is -og. (Practice asking your child what words rhyme with "dog." Please make sure all their responses are real words.) We will continue practicing segmenting words (or as we all like to say in class "chopping up words"), producing ending sounds for words, writing lowercase letters and substituting sounds for words at the beginning (ex big~ change the /b/ to a /w/ and the new word is wig.)

Our Reading lessons will be about comparing and contrasting two similar stories. The stories we are reading are Three Little Pigs (the version where the pigs are eaten by the wolf and the wolf dies at the end of the story.) and The Three Ninja Pigs.
I haven't found video's on Youtube that match our stories yet... but I'm going to keep checking. :)

Second Step~ Calming Strategies

Today we used our Second Step Curriculum and worked on calming strategies we could use so that we don't get overloaded by an emotion. :) We discussed being super excited, super scared, super angry and so much more!! (The class really enjoyed using the word SUPER! haha)
The strategies we discussed were "Checking in with our Tummy", BIG deep breaths, chair pushing/pulling  and "Snail Counting." Here are explanations on how to do them. :)

"Checking in with our Tummy"~ You put your hand against your stomach and count quietly from 1-10.

Chair Pushing~ Sit on a chair and push the chair down for ten seconds. Shake your hands in the sky when you are done.

Chair Pulling~ Sit on a chair and pull the chair up for ten seconds. Shake your hands in the sky when you are done.

"Snail Counting"~ Stop moving and close your eyes, then count SLOWLY from 1-10.

Enjoy this video from Second Step. :) Be ready to hear your child sing along...

MATH
After several great weeks learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes we are starting a new unit on addition and subtraction. I want you to see the Florida benchmarks we will be mastering in the upcoming months.

MAFS.K. OA.1.2
Solve addition and subtraction word problems and add and subtract within 10.
MAFS.K. OA.1.4
For any number from 1-9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number.
MAFS.K. OA.1.5
Fluently add and subtract within 5
MAFS.K. OA.1.a
Use addition and subtraction within 10 to solve word problems with both addends unknown.

This week’s homework packet will include addition flashcards for addition facts to 5. After teaching 2nd grade for 3 years I have experienced first hand how important it is for students to know their facts fluently.

And for some fun enjoy this addition video!

ELA
The sight words we are focusing on are use, there, when and were.  During skills we are doing lots of sound work!! We will practice rhyming through word families. The word family for this week is -it. (Practice asking your child what words rhyme with "kit." Please make sure all their responses are real words.) We will continue practicing segmenting words (or as we all like to say in class "chopping up words"), producing ending sounds for words, writing lowercase letters and substituting sounds for words at the beginning (ex big~ change the /b/ to a /w/ and the new word is wig.)

Our Reading lessons will be about identifying the reasons an author gives to support their ideas in text and a Second Step lesson is about Emotion Management~ ways to calm ourselves down when we get upset.  Our Writing lessons will be to write an opinion piece about someone in our family. Students will be expected to give a minimum of two reasons that support their opinion. They will need to illustrate their reasons and then write sentences to match them. We are REALLY stressing using sounds and spaces!! We are expecting students to write most/to all of the sounds they hear and ALL sight words that we have learned in class to be written correctly.

SCIENCE
We are revisiting shadows this week. Last weeks weather did not cooperate as I would have liked for some fun shadow observing activities! So we will try, try again!

Book Fair Time!!

Our Book Fair will be going on for the next two weeks. (It ends on March13.) Our class will be visiting the book fair on Wednesday, March 4. Parents are welcome to join us and help their child shop from 12:00-12:45.

If students do not bring money to shop that day... no worries! Every afternoon from 2:00 until dismissal time, students can walk down to the Book Fair and get their shopping done. :) Or you can bring your child to Family Night on March 12, from 4:30-6:30. :)

Books are not the only thing being sold at the Book Fair. They are also selling book marks, pencils, pointers and lots of other knick knacks. The items are priced from $1.00 on up.

Here are pictures of items your child can hope to see at the Book Fair!
