Sight Word Readers

We had a Class Competition for Sight Word Reading. :) The students had to read at least 100 of the sight words that we learned this school year. This included~ color words, number words and every word sent home on the Sight Word Money.

Well it was challenging, but so many students mastered the Challenge. Enjoy watching them in the slideshow below. (They ate lunch in class with me and Mrs. Pitts today.)

Hat Day

The students were too cute with their hats on... but many had them off because they wanted to show their friends their "Super Cool Hats!" haha  So they didn't wear them as much in the classroom, as they did outside at recess.
(I'm sorry if your child is missing from the pictures, they wanted to play and didn't want to be photographed. haha)

Enjoy the pictures!

MATH
We are busy decomposing and composing teen numbers. Students are learning that the teen numbers can be broken into one ten and single ones. This is the foundation for place value which is a very important building block for the upcoming year in first grade. The students will learn that they can create addition and subtraction equations based on breaking apart these numbers. Continue working on Subtraction fluency cards. Fluency is addition and subtraction is so important.

ELA
The sight words we are focusing on are any, too, want and also. Make sure to practice letter sounds daily with your child- use lowercase letter cards. The word family for this week is -ack(Only make real words... not pretend words.) Our blend for the week is ch-. We will continue practicing segmenting words, producing medial sounds for words and substituting sounds for words at the end.
Our Reading lessons will be about figuring out unknown words in books. We will be discussing the words from the following books: EEK! There's a Mouse in the House and The Sleeping Pig. Here are the youtube video's for both books, check them out and discuss possible unknown words with your child. :)
We are still working on our Kindergarten Memory Books. They are too cute!! The students have been working hard at using their sounds and the Word Wall to find all their sight words.

SCIENCE
This week we are exploring seeds and plants. We will observe various seeds and learn how they are how a plant begins. Our class will take a nature walk this week too! I know the students will enjoy comparing different types of trees and plants we have on our school campus!
(Here is a picture of how our Class Tree looked back in January.  :) Be on the lookout for a new picture and see how our Class Tree looks now! )

International Day 2015

International Day was a BLAST!!

We began the day with a Parade. Lots of students dressed up in costumes to represent countries around the world. :) Namiah and Abigail were in the Parade and we cheered them on. Namiah represented Jamaica and Abigail represented the Phillipines.

As soon as the Parade ended we were on our way to our first presentation with Mr. D. He drew Caricatures of a few students and one of me and Mrs. Pitts. We were drinking DD coffee. (haha The kids told him we drink iced coffee every day! haha)

After that we walked around the "World" and traveled to all the different Continents~ Asia, North America, South America, Europe, Antarctica, Australia and ended with Africa (our Continent of Study). In each area we had our passports stamped by a Customs Agent and sampled a food. The foods sampled were sticky rice, chocolate chip cookies, bananas, croissants, shaved ice, Lamington cake and fig newtons.

Then we had three more back to back presentations~ Interactive Story Telling Show. The class LOVED getting a chance to participate in the show and answer all her questions. Afterwards we went to the Multi- Purpose room and watched our very own Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Handres and a group of adults dance English Country Line Dancing. The class was so amazed to see Mrs. Handres and loved watching all the foot work. (There's a short video in the slideshow so you can experience a little of the dancing too.) Our last presentation was all about Morocco. We discussed the language, the traditions and the Dancing!! The class did a great job dancing to the beat of the music, but a few... their dance moves are way too fast for the syncronized moves. haha

Anyway, we hope everyone enjoyed International Day and look forward to the celebration again next school year!! ooh make sure to check out the International Shirts the students painted. Everyone worked really hard on them!

Play Day Door Contest

During the Week of Play Day, everyone decorated their front doors to show off their students superhero powers. Then Mrs. Gordon and the group of judges picked a winner for each grade level... well our class WON for Kindergarten!! :) Everyone will receive a bottle of superhero bubbles to bring home on Monday!

Here is a picture of our door titled~ Superhero School.
We decided to have the stuents decorate a superhero picture and then come up with their superhero name.
The pictures are cute, but the names are adorable!

Enjoy watching the slideshow. :)
