**Continue to have your child practice writing their first name. We need to see the first
letter as an uppercase letter and the remaining letters lowercase. Once that is
mastered, begin the same process for the last name.**
MATH
We will continue to work on
our counting skills. Students need to be able to count to 100 by the
end of the year, but they also need to count from any given number. For
example, if a child is given
14 they will be able to count on from there, 15,16,17 etc. We are also
comparing the value of numbers. The students will learn a fun “Compare
Game” which is similar to “Go Fish”!
Enjoy this Youtube counting video. The class LOVES it!!
ELA
ELA
(English Language Arts~ Reading and Writing)
We will continue to practice letters and letter sounds using flash cards and singing phonics songs. The sight words are- day, get, on and said. We will have a Fire Safety theme this week, books and a poem. A Visit to the Fire Station, Firehouse! and 'Firefighters.' We will also use our Second Step Curriculum. We will review empathy and discuss body language to figure out how other people feel.
At home, read any fire house or safety books to your child (Fiction or Non-Fiction) and discuss the importance of fire fighters. Discuss the uniforms they wear and how they help protect the firefighters. Then discuss a fire escape plan for exiting your house safely in the event of a fire. **Use this link to get your fire escape paper from the blog~ First Grade Fanatics, draw your house and map out your exits. Don't forget to choose a meeting place for when you exit the house.
Here are two Youtube videos that we plan on watching in class. :)
SCIENCE
This week’s focus is
on the practice of science. We will look at how scientists explore,
observe, investigate, ask questions and work together to solve problems.
Playing the game “Headbands”
is a fun way to practice our questioning skills and working together as
a group.
