MATH
We are finishing up subtraction word problems within 10. Please make sure to review that in subtraction the amount of the whole group is written first and that we use a minus sign. (Your child may even say they need "Linus the Minus.")

READING SKILLS AND WRITING
The sight words we are focusing on are where, through, much and right. Make sure to practice letter sounds daily with your child- use lowercase letter cards. The word family for this week is -ip(Only make real words... not pretend words.) Our blend for the week is sh-. We will continue practicing segmenting words, producing medial sounds for words and substituting sounds for words at the end.
Our Writing Lessons will consist on completing pages in our Kindergarten Memory Books. :) The class will brainstorm ideas for pages that should go into our books and then we will work on completing a few pages this week. While working we will stress the importance of spacing, sounds, sight words and punctuation.

DAILY AFRICAN LESSONS
We wanted to focus a little bit more on Africa before International Day arrives... and we have decided to incorporate fun, excitement and crafts! We will be learning about the pyramids in Egypt, discussing hieroglyphics, animals found in Africa and singing African songs!

JAMBO everyone, JAMBO!
Here is a short Youtube Video to get you all excited!

Play Day Pictures!!

I hope every one went home and told their parents a ton about Play Day. :) It was great!! Our Play Day started a little late due to rain... but it didn't stop the kids from having any FUN when we finally got to go outside. :)

We wanted to give a special thanks to the parents that Volunteered their time and stopped by to cheer their children on: Mrs. Gray, Mr. Downer, Mrs. Barlow and Mrs. Orr. Your children LOVED having you there!!

CHANGE IN MAY/JUNE CALENDAR

CHANGES IN MAY/JUNE CALENDAR!!

We noticed there was a mistake with the Calendar... Today was the last Early Release Day for the School Year. :) Please cross out the other ERD written on the Calendar.

Then add our PARTY DAY on June 3. :) More information about the party will be sent home in your child's folder.

*These changes will be reflected on the Weekly Conduct Sheets. We will not be printing new calendars, but you should be able to print out a new one from the May Calendar Link.
 Thank you for understanding.

Decorating T-shirts for International Day

Our May/June Calendar informed everyone we will be decorating solid colored t-shirts for International Cultural Day. :)
**This activity is not mandatory, but it is TONS OF FUN!**

We went through all the possible symbols that we would be willing to draw on a t-shirt. (I have pictured a few of the favorites here.) To see all the symbols, go to this link. When the students bring a shirt to school, they will be asked what symbol they want and it will be drawn on their shirt. During Recess time the students will have the opportunity to paint their shirts.

***T-shirts need to be sent in by May 8.***

Police Survival Bags

I emailed this out to our Kindergarten Distribution List... but just in case you aren't on it, I am posting it here too. :)

All of you should have received a note discussing the Community Service Project our school is doing for National Police Week. (It is celebrated May 10-16) The project is headed by Mrs. Tokarek, she is one of our 1st grade teachers.
She is collecting different types of candy to fill up Police Survival Bags. She has said, "Anyone who brings in a bag of candy gets something from her Treasure Box." Her treasure box has LOTS of things in it. :) So if you wish to participate~ please send in the candy by Wednesday May 6th.

If you have any questions about the candy, please let us know and anything we are unable to answer will be directed to Mrs. Tokarek.

Here is a picture of the different types of candy we purchased for the Police Survival Bags.

(Any color t-shirt, we will use black paint to make the designs.) We will hang the t-shirts up at school and save them for the students to wear on International Day.

MATH
We continue to master subtraction word problems within 10. Some students are struggling with "take away" so we will be very diligent this week in clarifying the order of a subtraction equation.
Here is the pirate subtraction video we have enjoyed in class!

ELA
The sight words we are focusing on are then, could, our and say. Make sure to practice letter sounds daily with your child- use lowercase letter cards. The word family for this week is -am(Only make real words... not pretend words.) Our blend for the week is cr-. We will continue practicing segmenting words, producing medial sounds for words and substituting sounds for words at the end.

Our Reading lessons will be about comparing and contrasting characters in a book. We will be discussing the book The Little Red Hen and recording our information about the characters on a T-Chart.  Our Writing Lessons will be about sharing facts about a Cheetah. We will listen to a book about Cheetahs and watch short videos about them.

SCIENCE
Comparing real animals/plants and imaginary animals/plants has been fun. We move on to comparing all types of animals and plants. We will focus on animals found in Africa as this is our continent study for Kindergarten. Also, we will check out the Decorah Eagles and watch baby eagles hatch from their eggs. They are growing quickly. Here's the website if your family wants to check it out at home. www.decoraheaglecamalerts.com

Play Day

The time has come, PLAY DAY is almost here!!
Tuesday is Play Day for the whole school. Our time to go outside and participate in the events is 1:00-2:15. We will be joined by the first graders.
ooh if you ordered a Play Day shirt, make sure to wear it on Tuesday. :) We will be wearing ours to show our Kindergarten School Spirit.

There are two new things going on this year: they will be selling Hawaiian Shaved Ice for $3. (Please put this money in a baggie and label it!!)    25% of the proceeds will come back to the school. They will be setting up the table at 10:30 and our Kindergarten students may buy from that time up until our Play Day session. *They are asking that the students not buy during our session, so that they can participate in the events. The other new thing is PHOTO STATIONS!! There will be three photo areas with props for photos to be taken. :)

*** We are still looking for Volunteers. If you have free time and can volunteer your time to set up Play Day, break down Play Day or run an event~ please contact Mrs. Gordon (she is our P.E.
