Storybook Character Parade

**Attention Attention Attention**

Kindergarten and First Grade have changed from having a Vocabulary Parade on October 31 to having a...
Storybook Character Parade.

Today your child brought home a letter (pictured above) about the Storybook Character Parade. We are super excited to see the students dress up. (We are even thinking of dressing up too. :) We love to take part in School Spirit!!) We want to stress that you do not need to go out and buy a costume. Look through books and I'm sure you will find a lot in the house that can be used to dress your child up like a storybook character. :) (I went searching for some ideas and I came across the coolest blog ever!! The blog title is 'Hello Literacy.' Go to her blog through this link and you will see a ton of pictures of the teachers and students at her school participating in their Parade.

If you have any questions please let us know.
Other than that, we look forward to receiving the bottom portion of the paper informing us of your child's storybook character. :)

Week of October 6

Our Resources for the week are: Monday- #1-18 ART and #19-36 MUSIC, Tuesday- ART and Thursday- MUSIC. Wednesday is an Early Release Day, please remember our lunch is at 10:00. The Fun Friday activity is Red, White and Blue! (Wear as much of the colors as you can!!) Plus the local Fire Department is sending Firefighters are way to discuss fire safety at 1:00 on Friday. (As long as they don't have a call to go on.) :) Jaiden will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the class.
Don't forget to send in your signed Permission Slip and Money ($12.50) for the Field Trip to Diamond D. Ranch. Also, Chaperones need to prepay $10.00.
ALL MONEY needs to be turned in by Tuesday, October 7.

**Continue to have your child practice writing their first name. We need to see the first letter as an uppercase letter and the remaining letters lowercase. Once that is mastered, begin the same process for the last name.**

MATH
We will continue to work on our counting skills. Students need to be able to count to 100 by the end of the year, but they also need to count from any given number. For example, if a child is given 14 they will be able to count on from there, 15,16,17 etc.  We are also comparing the value of numbers. The students will learn a fun “Compare Game” which is similar to “Go Fish”!
Enjoy this Youtube counting video. The class LOVES it!!

ELA
(English Language Arts~ Reading and Writing)
We will continue to practice letters and letter sounds using flash cards and singing phonics songs. The sight words are- day, get, on and said. We will have a Fire Safety theme this week, books and a poem.  A Visit to the Fire Station, Firehouse! and 'Firefighters.' We will also use our Second Step Curriculum. We will review empathy and discuss body language to figure out how other people feel.
At home, read any fire house or safety books to your child (Fiction or Non-Fiction) and discuss the importance of fire fighters. Discuss the uniforms they wear and how they help protect the firefighters. Then discuss a fire escape plan for exiting your house safely in the event of a fire. **Use this link to get your fire escape paper from the blog~ First Grade Fanatics, draw your house and map out your exits. Don't forget to choose a meeting place for when you exit the house.

Here are two Youtube videos that we plan on watching in class. :)

SCIENCE
This week’s focus is on the practice of science. We will look at how scientists explore, observe, investigate, ask questions and work together to solve problems. Playing the game “Headbands” is a fun way to practice our questioning skills and working together as a group.

School Spirit!!

ooh I almost forgot to tell all of you... our school started a new School Spirit Tradition on Friday's. The class that has the most spirit in their hallway gets to display a Spirit Trophy in their classroom for the week. (Thank you PTA for providing us with the trophies. :) We really appreciate it and the students LOVE it!!)
Well, our class won the trophy for the Kindergarten and First Grade Hallway! Woohoo!!!
(Unfortunately I don't recall who won for the 2&3 or the 4&5 hallway... the class was cheering and hollering after they heard "Ms.Finocchiaro and Mrs.Pitts!" that we weren't able to hear anything else. haha)

In case you don't get a chance to come down to our room and see the trophy, here is a picture. :)

Stuffed Animal Day

We LOVED seeing all the stuffed animals today. :) Almost all of the students came in with stuffed animals and a few were sad, so Mrs. Pitts found a few "animal friends" in the closet and allowed the students to borrow them for the school day.

The students went to their Reading Stations and Centers with their stuffed animals. We went around the room and took pictures. :)

Nature Walk

Today we took a Nature Walk during Science. We used our sense of Sight to observe our surroundings. After our walk, we returned to the classroom and made a journal entry of the things we saw.

Enjoy watching the slideshow!
Also, ask your child what they observed and drew in their journal. :)
